A few weeks ago I wrote about the site gobarbra.com that had taken advantage of popular culture to demonstrate the technical capabilities of some voice interpretation software. Here is another great example of people taking topical events & repurposing them for their own entertainment. Some, clever person has taken Charlie Sheen’s latest media faux-pas and created an entertaining website out of them. It is simple and employs social media sharing facilities to gain popularity. There is an option to share via twitter or facebook and to print the comments onto t-shirts.
For a brand, the important point to observe here is that popularity comes as a result of identifying cultural phenomena and taking advantage of it in a timely fashion. LiveTheSheen has over 300,000 likes on facebook and crashed due to high volumes of traffic visiting it over the last few days. It reinforces the need to remain flexible in light of the speed at which news and information get to market and then travel through it.
